The Untippable Martini Glass
Design of an anti-spill martini glass for Princess Yachts, conceived as a gift for clients during the waiting period between ordering and receiving their vessel. The project encompassed concept design, ideation, prototyping, and aesthetic and material exploration.
The real problem is not the boat’s tilt but its oscillating motion, which generates a wave inside the glass that builds into a tsunami effect. The solution lies in converting that oscillating motion into a circular one: by shifting the center of mass outside the plane of oscillation, the glass rotates on its stem rather than rocking, moving with the rhythm of the waves instead of against them.
The process began with a prototype in sand-cast pewter. The final version integrates a lathe-turned stainless steel stem — evoking the classic martini glass silhouette while meeting the demands of a nautical environment — and a mold-blown glass bowl with a cold-working phase: cutting, grinding, and polishing to the required angle. A dedicated holding jig was also designed for this last process.
